1. What is the concept behind the store?

Thank you so much for the interest in my store! I opened machus in november of 2011. After 8 years of my original store, Local35, i felt it was time to break away from Hawthorne and develop a store that could have a larger concept. Local35 was a great store but towards the end , the brands i carried like RVCA, WESC all started to sell to Zumiez Nordstrom and other big box stores. I didn’t see a point to being a small store and carrying those brands.

Machus was the next level for me in my concept. a mens store that featured harder to find labels, curated in a more modern, monochromatic aesthetic. Machus is also a smaller store than Local35. The idea to shrink physical size was my business model of a smaller store with a larger worldwide consumer, that means a webstore!

Machus is located in the growing Lower East Side of Portland. 2 blocks from the River. Centrally located in Portland and really easy for visitors to find!

2. How did you come up with the name Machus?

I have a 5 generation long family history is retail. Often using our names for the names of the store. It creates a great brand name while showing people that my store is still me. I love my customers and keeping that connection is utmost importance. Even online!

3. How do you find designers you showcase in your shop?

I search them out online or while traveling. I love working with designers and reps closely. If we don’t have a connection with the brand, we generally don’t work with them. I have to be as excited to work with them personally and they are with us. its a two way street and that makes for a more honest store i think. you know that anything in my store is coming from a great brand and great people.

4. What are your top 3 favorite things in the store?

My machus private label t’s. I wear them DAILY.
