Lindsey is the talented designer behind the Portland-based brand Reif which has recently begun to expand in such an exciting way! Her amazing spring collection was unlike anything we had seen from Reif before, complete with an amazing open back jumpsuit, cross over crop tops and sheer trousers. On top of that, her new basics line, of which we recently got a sneak peak, includes at least one item that every woman could use. We are also long time fans of her tumblr - her manicure monday and house tuesday are always some of our favorite posts. Naturally, we had to do a Closet Visit with the talented designer to see how she incorporates her designs into her wardrobe and to check out the other treasures that awaited us. We spent an afternoon hanging out with Lindsey and her closet in her Northeast Portland home that she shares with her boyfriend, her dog Carl and her cat.. Enjoy the photos and fun interview with Lindsey Reif!
1. Who is your style influenced by?
I can't pinpoint one specific person that my style is influenced by. I pull from a lot of different realms for inspiration, but I always gravitate towards confidence in fashion - if someone can own a look and doesn't let what other people think influence their clothing choices, that's pretty inspiring.
2. Favorite place(s) to shop in Portland?
Frances May, Palace, Backtalk, Solestruck, all of Portland's illustrious thrift shops.
3. Describe your style!
I like to wear things that are subtle but interesting. Mostly neutrals and layers but with pops of color when it comes to accessories. I'm constantly running around on errands and meetings for my line, so I need clothing that is comfortable and functional yet still looks put together and a little bit dressy.
4. What is your spring must have?
The skort! They are the epitome of a functional garment - all the cuteness of a mini skirt but with full mobility. Perfect for a fashionable lady on the go.
5. 5 things you can’t live without?
Wardrobe wise? Black tights, bright lipstick, the perfect denim jacket, earrings, and circle scarves.
6. 3 favorite items in your closet?
This amazing navy blue blouse from the 1930s that my mom thrifted in South Dakota
My Samantha Pleet romper - the first piece of designer clothing I ever purchased, and I still love it. SP is the romper queen, after all!
My vintage Ferragamo oxfords that I bought at a vintage shop here in Portland. Hands down the best fitting shoe I've ever owned, and the best color (moss green)
7. How do you choose what you wear in the morning?
A lot of it depends on what I have going on that day. I usually am drawn towards one piece of clothing or an accessory as I'm getting dressed and then I build an outfit around that. Most of my wardrobe is mix and match so it makes things a bit easier.
8. What is the best thing about your job?
The best thing about my job is that I get to wear samples before collections are released. Oh, and all of the lovely trades with other designers. I get to wear pretty things designed by rad local people and that's pretty awesome.
9. Any shopping advice you have?
Even if you don't think you can pull off a trend or a certain style of clothing, you should still at least try it on. Some of the best wardrobe decisions I've ever made were things that I wasn't sure if I could wear and they ended up being some of my favorite pieces.
